Consider this first question-
Are you creating it just for yourself, a place of refuge, perhaps. A secret store of pleasure and a place to relax alone.
Maybe you want somewhere special to share with your friends and family. Scented plants bring back intense memories of other good times together.
Or will this be a garden for other people?
If so any special needs they
have should be considered carefully.
Before trying to answer this second question perhaps you should consider both what is possible and also what space will give you the kind of sensory garden you want.
How big is your plot?
Do you even have a plot? (Perhaps a window box?)
Would a small secret hiding place for you and perhaps one other be a first choice?
Or will you maybe want to invite the world in to see what a wonderful place you have made!
Well you may not need any help at all. But if you do don't be afraid to ask.
If you buy plants the nurseryman or garden centre should tell you all you need to know about them.
There are lots of magazines and books just packed with ideas and advice.
There are Internet Newsgroups such as rec.gardens, rec.gardens.roses or uk.rec.gardening - but it is best to keep your questions simple. Although interesting the answers may not always be 100% right!
If what you want is help with understanding how to produce a garden which will both enrich all your senses and be the sort of creation you were looking for there are plenty of professional garden designers, like myself, who will do the whole thing for you, and the best of them will give you what you want. The questions you have just been asking yourself will help to make sure that happens.
Possibly one of the most satisfying ways is to use an internet support
service, where for a small fee you can get the help you need using e-mail to
pull together your own design.
Then the practical work needed to
change your dream into reality can be broken down for you into small
achievable parts that can be finished in your free moments or "farmed out"
to those with local skills, when necessary.
